Pitching rate calculator hero

Pitching Rate Calculator

A quick and easy check to determine the recommended pitch rate.
Avoiding underpitching helps brewers establish the right foundation for fermentation from the start. It improves repeatability from batch to batch. It gives brewers greater confidence in fermentation behaviour. It also helps support reliable attenuation, predictable tank scheduling, and a finished beer that reflects the intended brand and style.
Simply select your yeast, the starting °Plato, fermentation temperature and batch size to check the recommended pitching rate tailored to your needs.

Recommended Pitching Rate:

Lower pitching rate

Using fewer yeast bricks (i.e. a lower pitching rate) can boost the production of derived flavours (e.g. fruity esters). You may notice a slightly lower fermentation speed. For a lower pitching rate, we recommend a stepwise reduction and evaluation across multiple brews.

Bricks needed:

Effective Pitching Rate:

Warning

Note, This pitching rate is over % lower than the ideal rate, and may result in an incomplete fermentation.

Ideal pitching rate

We recommend this pitching rate as a compromise between fermentation speed and yeast cost, for consistent results (this utilises a whole-number of 500g bricks for simplicity).

Bricks needed:

Effective Pitching Rate:

This pitching rate is recommended for the optimal balance of fermentation and flavour.

Higher pitching rate

Using more yeast bricks (i.e. a higher pitching rate) can increase the fermentation speed, but may decrease the production of derived flavours (e.g. fruity esters). For a higher pitching rate, we recommend a stepwise reduction and evaluation across multiple brews.

Bricks needed:

Effective Pitching Rate:

Warning

Note, This pitching rate is over % higher than the ideal rate, and may result in a weaker flavour.
